About

Introduction

We are an Internet-based numismatic society, dedicated to fostering communication through the SGS Newsletter, email, and our website — minimizing the use of non-electronic means. For more information, please reach out to us at contactus@southerngoldsociety.org.

Guided by our Mission Statement, we maintain an informal, relaxed association governed by a Board of Directors. Our official annual gathering takes place alongside the Georgia Numismatic Association Coin Show, though members are welcome to connect at other numismatic events throughout the year.

Annual Gathering

As detailed in our January–March newsletter, we had hoped to organize our traditional annual gathering during the Georgia Numismatic Association (GNA) Coin Show at the Dalton Convention Center. This event has long served as a valued opportunity for members to connect in person, share insights on Southern gold coinage (from the Dahlonega, Charlotte, and New Orleans branch mints, as well as the private issues of Templeton Reid and the Bechtlers), and enjoy the fellowship that defines our society.

Despite the call for volunteers to assist with organization and to present educational programs—followed by several individual outreach efforts—we regrettably received no responses. As a result, time has run out to plan and host a formal SGS gathering this year. We appreciate the understanding of our members and regret that circumstances did not allow for the full event we envisioned.

That said, the GNA Coin Show remains an excellent venue for Southern gold enthusiasts, with hundreds of dealers and collectors expected to attend. For those SGS members planning to be at the show on Friday, April 17, 2026, we invite you to join a casual, no-host (Dutch treat) supper with fellow members at the Oakwood Cafe in Dalton (a short drive from the convention center, known for its classic Southern comfort food and welcoming atmosphere).

If you’re interested in participating and would like details—such as a suggested meeting time or how to coordinate—please stop by the National Coin & Bullion Association (NCBA) table during show hours on Friday. An SGS contact will be available there to provide more information and help connect attendees.

We look forward to seeing many of you at the show and hope this informal get-together provides a chance for enjoyable conversation about our shared passion. As always, feel free to reach out to us at contactus@southerngoldsociety.org with any questions or ideas for future activities.

Let’s keep the spirit of Southern gold alive through these smaller, spontaneous connections!

Application for Membership

Annual membership dues are $25 (January 1-December 31). Charter and Founding memberships are no longer offered, but Regular membership is available. Membership for new members joining in October, November, or December extends through the next year. Membership may be renewed each year for the current annual membership dues. Considering the organization’s Internet, electronic format, we do not issue paper membership cards or certificates recognizing Charter or Founding members. Founding members received a special “thank you” letter by email. Each new member receives an email welcoming them, stating their membership number. Membership renewals are acknowledged by email.

Checks for membership fees should be made payable to the “Southern Gold Society” and mailed to David Crenshaw, P.O. Box 237, Dacula, GA 30019-0004.

Note: The initial dues structure, including that of the Charter and Founding Members, was an attempt to financially “jump” start the Society. Additional costs will be incurred in constructing and maintaining the Society’s website. The dues structure will be reviewed annually and adjustments made (either up or down), based on the actual expenses incurred. It is believed that the $25 annual fee should be considered a nominal sum for most collectors of southern gold coins.
